MHS ALUMNI STORIES 2010
9th Of A 10 Part Series…….PART A
1980 and 1985

THIRTY YEARS ago the Classmates of 1980, all sixty-eight of them, were eager to gain their freedom from high school. But during the year, they worked hard making sure their history was preserved. This class produced an “Annual” very unique in that it has a beautiful outdoor cover scene and is titled ‘Tiger 80’. The “Annual” staff included: Sharon Horton, the Advisor; Editor was Jennifer Houck; Co-Editor was Sherman Houck; Photographers were Don Sparks and John Horton. This Book can be seen at the Old Greer County Museum where this writer was also able to purchase the book. Many old yearbooks have been given to the museum from many different sources. Sale of these excess books helps maintain the museum and the Mangum School Room in particular. Anyone looking for old ‘annuals or yearbooks’, should call the Old Greer County Museum located in Mangum; it is the same building as the Old Border Hospital or the Southwest Baptist Hospital from the 1950’s.

Mangum ISD school leadership included: Superintendent, Bob Garton; High School Principal, Lainial Gilbert; Assistant Principal and Counselor, Don Sparks; Director of Federal Programs, E. W. Clement; Board of Education consisted of: James G. Calcote, President, Roger Reeves; V-President, J. H. Heatly; Maryanne McDonald Fite; Barbara Matthews and Clerk, Balma Brignon.

Miss Mia MacRobert was crowned Miss Mangum Pageant as noted by the Yearbook.

Junior High Faculty consisted of: Jim Ed Bull, Principal; Mary Jane Mendenhall, Secretary; Beth Anderson, Connie Bull, Doris Garlington, Duane Meinert, Carol Hardin, Kim Merrill, John Schaufele, Joyce Snow and Rodney Wales and Roberta Williams.

A last page was added to the Yearbook telling about the feat of Charpylene Reed and showing her picture. She became the first Mangum girl sprinter to win a state title. She claimed the State Champion Class A 100 yard dash. She had the best time of anyone in A, 2A or B schools. Rodney Wales was her coach. What a nice tribute in this ‘annual.’

The Mangum Star-News, May 15, 1980, has a headline article stating, “Festive Plans Complete for 71st Annual Gathering of MHS Alumni”. In figuring that 1980 was the ‘71st gathering’, it is an accurate statement considering the FIRST banquet was held in 1910. Actually, each year when alumni gather, the group has completed one year beyond the actual date. Therefore, the MHS Alumni Association has actually COMPLETED 100 years of annual celebrations and will celebrate at the gathering May 2010. This is why the Board, officers and local members have been working around the clock getting ready for the Association’s big 100th celebration (1910 - 2010) the same as when the state of Oklahoma celebrated it’s 100th year as a state (1907 - 2007).

In 1980, the Mangum High School Alumni Officers were: President, Victor Wickersham, Class of 1923; V-President, Joe McGuffin, Class of 1965; Secretary, Louise Boyd-Price, C lass of 1953; Assistant Secretary, Beth Thompson-White, Class of 1953; Treasurer, Laverne Wallace-Lanford, Class of 1948; and Historian Kay Morgan Staton, Class of 1965

Recognized as 3rd generation families were: Melissa Price (1980), her mother, Louise Boyd Price, 1953, and her grandmother; Margaret Shields Boyd 1916. Roy Doyle, Class of 1925, saw his grand daughter graduate this year also: Beverly Cypert, daughter of Kathryn Doyle Cypert, Class of 1961. Beverly’s father, Skip Cypert, was also Class of 1961. Note: Both Kathryn and Skip are deceased.

The Mangum-Star News, May 24, 1990, had huge coverage of Alumni events and a very nice group photo of the 1980 Grads in their caps and gowns.

1985 CLASS…………..25 years………

Twenty-five years ago, the Class of 1985 was looking forward to life after high school. This class did produce a yearbook recording life as they lived it. I was able to view and copy portions of this book at the Mangum High School library through the courtesy of Cheryl Lively and Barbie Stover. This “Annual” which is scarce to find, has a beautiful burnt orange cover with a nice gold Tiger on the cover. It is titled, simply, “Tiger”. The book covers grades Kindergarten through twelfth making it a viable piece of history for the Mangum schools. The book was easily read and sections were dated with exact dates of events. Another good aspect of the book was the full page coverage of Departments along with the teachers’ pictures. This yearbook staff appeared to revere the instructors and what they attempt to do in the classroom more than any other Yearbook this writer has studied. If you’re willing to sell one of the 1985 ‘yearbooks’, please contact this writer.

The 1985 MHS ALUMNI OFFICERS were: President, Sharon Patton-Callen Class of 1970; V-President, Judy Tidmore, 1962; Secretary, Doris Avery-Nelson, 1949; Treasurer, Laverne Wallace-Lanford, 1948; Historians were Linda Foraker-Lanford 1950 and Barbie Ridley-Stover, 1972…….positions they held for 22 years.

The Mangum-Star News, June 6, 1985, had good coverage of the Alumni Banquet in which 496 grads attended on May 31 in the ‘new gym’ on North Penn Street. “The Class of 1935 celebrated their 50th with 21 members present. The Class of 1960 and 1975 were each celebrating special anniversaries. Honorary members attending were: Faye Wharton Barton, Monroe Chadwick and Herman Bottom. The oldest class and member present was Josephine Overton, Class of 1917.” Note: This writer learned that Greer Oklahoma Smith, Class of 1925, signed in as Homa F. Smith. Those little changes can confuse the person researching specific names. This news account also noted that “invitations may be picked up at Smiley’s Gifts and Carpet Store.” This is of special interest since today’s invitations are mailed to every member at the cost of about $1500 to the Association. When invitations are returned, they are put into a ‘dead end’ file and it is noted as such on the massive 5000-name roster which is kept updated by Mary McDaniel Scott assisted by input from Board Members and Association Members. Unless someone gives the Board a new address, when mail returns, that member will probably never receive another invitation.

According to the Mangum-Star News, June 6, 1985, four hundred ninety-six people attended the Alumni Banquet on May 31 which was held in the ‘new gym’, meaning the new gym standing today where the ‘old high school’ used to stand before it burned. Some times facts need to be clarified for generations to come who will be questioning which facility one is discussing. The ‘old old gym’ still standing today on Pennsylvania, was the sports arena, auditorium for graduations and a favorite banquet gathering place for many many years for our ‘old alumni’. It also served as the Band Hall in the 1950’s before a new Band Room was built under the input and supervision of Larry Cooper, MHS Band Director. The new Band Room contained sound proof practice rooms where students could practice without disturbing or being disturbed. Every practice room was glassed in so that Mr. Cooper could keep a watchful eye on his students.

It must be noted that one of these classmates, Jeff Roach, son of George and Peggy Roach, Mangum, helped headline a concert in 2005 with funds benefitting the Mangum City Hospital. Before then, Jeff had not performed in Mangum since 1989. Today, he’s a resident of Franklin, Tennessee, along with his wife and three children, where he has pursued his love of writing, playing and singing music. If his schedule allows, he will return for his 25th reunion this year and be apart of the entertainment Alumni weekend.

Next week, Series 9, Part B, will cover the Classes of 1990 and 1995. Any additions, corrections or comments will be appreciated. Please contact me at joy.grant@sbcglobal.net or 580-782-5107.

MHS ALUMNI STORIES 2010
9th In A Ten Part Series…..PART B
1990 and 1995 …..Celebrating 20 and 15 YEARS

The Class of 1990 produced a yearbook titled, “Tiger”. It is solid black with the embossed word “Tiger” in the color orange on the cover. This is a no-nonsense book with no ads or endorsements and it is all in black and white. It has a simple Table of Contents listing three schools. It covers all the groups, teams and its 72 pages list all students kindergarten through twelfth grades. The book is compact, plenty of history and scarce to find. The yearbook staff included: Randy White, Kim Wilhite, Jennifer Belford, Greg Christian, Debbie Ballew and Tammi Burns. This Historian enjoyed the whole layout and presentation patterns in the book. 1995 CLASS…………………15 YEARS

The year of 1995 began with sad news: The Mangum-Star News, March 2, 1995, headlines read: “Qtz. Mountain Lodge burns to the ground”. The Quartz Mountain Lodge, one of Oklahoma’s five state lodge/resorts, burned to the ground Monday evening when a fire started near the main lobby in the pool area. The main part of the lodge, including the restaurant and lobby, were completely destroyed. Firefighters from 14 area towns battled the blaze throughout the night against strong winds. Some buildings were saved but officials said it looks like a total loss. The lodge is owned by the State of Oklahoma and is operated by the Department of Tourism and Recreation

According to the Mangum-Star News, March 30, 1995, a front page article shows a MHS 1939 grad standing in front of the new Mangum Library sign. A new name appears on the sign: “The Margaret Carder Library Civic Center”. A retirement reception was held Friday at the Mangum Public Library in honor of outgoing Mayor Margaret Gray-Carder (MHS 1939), who had served as Mayor of Mangum for eight years. The City Commissioners unveiled the new library sign in Ms. Carder’s honor. Presenting awards to Ms. Carder included Danny George, the vice-president of the Oklahoma Municipal League of Directors; Senator Gilmer Capps, City Manager, Louise Boyd-Price (MHS Grad 1953) and City Clerk, Leon Christian.

In the meantime, the Class of 1995, with forty-seven students, had published a yearbook, a positive event and a permanent record of history. The theme for the Yearbook was, “May Our Paths Meet Again”. Note: Thanks to Tracie Holt-Mayabb, MHS Grad, for allowing this writer to copy portions of the book.

A tribute to the educators was well written for the following school leaders, faculty and support personnel: Superintendent, Gary Tyler; Roberta Williams, Federal Programs; Patti Paxton, Business Manager; Marilyn Caver, Superintendent’s Secretary; Bob Travis, High School principal and Don Sparks, High School Counselor; Shirley Berry, Marsha Alexander, Ruby J. Bull, Scott Faxtor, Loyd Fletcher, Roger Ford, Ladell Gibson, Joe Handke, Sharon Horton, Helen Henry, Darlene Irby, Lonnie Jack, Jackie Kenmore, Synott Mathews, Lea Ann Powell, Glenn Reeves, Janet Scott, Jim Scott, Gary Smith, Scott Snyder, Ruth Sweeney, Jane Travis, Julie Tyler and Mike Wendt.

Alumni invitations were mailed in April to approximately 2500 Association members. Included in the invitations was a letter to all members concerning the possibility of acquiring a building whereby the Alumni Association would have a place to meet each year. The letter further explained that the Alumni Board reached the conclusion that it was impractical to acquire and try to maintain a building. The Board voted to use part of the Building Fund to air-condition the new gym. This plan did not work out. The Alumni Board then indicated to the School Board that they would help renovate the ‘old gym’ to render it suitable for the Mixer. That plan also did not materialize. A Building Fund in the amount of $29,598 was on hold until all members had a chance to vote on another means of using the money. Eventually, through votes by the membership, this amount of money was moved into Certificates of Deposit and a Scholarship Fund was designated to be given to qualifying applicants each year. This plan is still in place today. However, in 2006-07, the Board of Directors voted for a specific amount of funds to be used in the future toward an alternative meeting place should one ever become available in Mangum.

The year’s alumni events were held May, 19, 1995, in the ‘new Mangum High School Gym’ located on North Penn Avenue. The theme was Mardi Gras. Registration began early on Friday at the Public Library until 3:00 P.M. Susie Q’s of Marlow catered the dinner. The BiGhumni, (spouses of graduates), held their dinner in the High School Cafeteria. After the banquet, the “Over 40 Party” was held in the High School Gym. A reception was ongoing in the gym foyer for anyone wanting to visit.

MHS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OFFICERS were: Carolyn Weaver Hooley Class of 1968; V–President, Cheryl Hooley Jenkins, Class of 1989; Secretary, Paula Nunn Banister, Class of 1982; Treasurer, Mary McDaniel Burgess, Class of 1972; Historians, Linda Lanford Foraker, Class of 1950 and Barbie Ridley Stover, Class of 1972.

A family was recognized at the banquet: Four generations of Scotts have passed through the halls of MHS: Gladys Wicker Scott, 1919; Jewett Scott, Jr., 1949; Twila Arms Scott, 1951, Holly Scott Johnson, 1970, and Amy Elizabeth Johnson, 1995.

The year 1995 was a history making year with actions or events having an effect on returning alumni members. On July 20, 1995, according to the Mangum-Star News, headline article says, “Storm damaged building coming down”. An August 1994 storm had torn part of the roof off
the old ‘Opry House’, which stood at the SW corner of the square. Flooding caused the second floor to collapse which in turn caused major damage throughout. The building had shifted during the storm and was later condemned. The American Legion, who owns the building, made plans to rebuild. This old Opry House, with lots of history, once housed a black-smith shop and Lowe’s Drug Store ( 1930’s and 1940’s), mattress shop and furniture store (1950’s), later a grocery store, the Mangum Star-News, American Legion and the Senior Meal Site. Through the years, it also served as an undertaking parlor, a Christian book and gift shop, an exercise salon and sewing notion shop. The second floor was also a favorite site for school dances and square dances in the 1950’s. Also, the second floor housed a doctor’s clinic in 1939; this writer was actually born in the doctor’s office at 3:00 A.M; the doctor arrived in his pajamas carrying his pants.

In re-placing the ‘old opry building’, the American Legion built a new metal building about 1996. which was later bricked to match the décor in Mangum. An outdoor BBQ patio was eventually built with help from the MHS Alumni Links 50’s BBQ crowd (originated by Harold Anderson and the Class of 1957) which gathered there for 13 years every May on Alumni Weekend. The Legion Hall still serves, to this day, as the perfect spot for visiting, parade watching, street dance participation and eating all one wants throughout the day. This year, Greta Hogan Kane and Class of 1964, have taken over the event which was renamed Ray Hogan BBQ a few years ago in honor of Mr. Hogan, long time MHS principal. They will be offering up BBQ and all the trimmings on May 22 around noon. Also, this year, the Alumni Breakfast will be served at the American Legion Hall beginning at 8:00 A.M. Anyone is welcome to attend.

Continuing with news, the Mangum Star-News, August 17, 1995 reported: Thanks to funding through the 1992 General Obligation Bond and 1994 and 1995 Revenue Bond Programs, Oklahoma’s state parks will receive a $30 million boost for improvements and new construction. Quartz Mountain Resort Park’s long awaited Performance Hall for the Summer Arts Institute comes in a number One costing $4 million. Bids were set and construction was to begin August 17; completion was expected in 18 months. The Alumni Banquet would move to this new location in 2001.

Series 10, the final chapter for 2010, will conclude with the Classes of 2000 and 2005. Any changes, corrections or deletions are appreciated. History needs to be corrected when errors are found. Contact this writer at joy.grant@sbcglobal.net or 580-782-5107. You may also read these series of articles on the Mangum School web site managed by Bob Bratton: www.mangum.k12.ok.us
