MHS ALUMNI STORIES 2010
6th in a 10 Part Series
1950 and 1955 Honor Years

A YEARBOOK WAS PUBLISHED

The Class of 1950 published the FIRST yearbook since the Class of 1939!!!!!! That’s good news. Sad news is that the only other yearbook published in the 1950’s was the Class of 1952. Thereafter the records lay dormant until the 1960’s when Yearbooks again became available to record school history. This 1950 Yearbook is solid black and a Tiger Head is embossed on the cover; it is named “The Tiger”. It was donated to this Historian by Bob and Patty Bratton. In turn, the Editorial Staff dedicated this volume to Miss Nina Davis, long time Mangum school teacher. It can also be viewed at the Old Greer County Museum.

The Tiger staff included: Connie Weese, June McArthur, Lee Wayne Morris, Paul Goode, Dale Bryant, Richard White, Wanda Sue Rush, Alma Lue Rush, H. C. Anglin, Darrell Price, Scotty Coffman, Bert Kirk, Winona Wilhite. Yearbook sponsor was Miss Minnie Lee Sumrow. This is a wonderful piece of history, well planned and indexed covering seventh grade through twelfth. All extra curricular clubs and activities are also included. There was also a Tiger Staff-School Newspaper published in 1950 supervised by Circulation Managers, Henry Warlick, Charles Worthen and Miss Johnnie Wilburn.

Headline news: A 1950 MHS graduate, Jim Scivally, would become City Manager according to The Mangum Star, September 13, 1971. He was welcomed to the job by Mayor Forrest Wright (MHS 1934) grad.

A bit of history during this time period: According to The Mangum Star, May 15, 1975, the Class of 1950 was celebrated 25 years since graduation from ‘MHS’. Fifty seniors graduated from Mangum High School in 1950; later, four more members were added: one is shown in the yearbook as attending second semester; two received a delayed diploma and a GED for their military time and one finished course work after graduation. Bob Barnett, Chamber of Commerce President, organized a welcoming party for the new high way post office bus which began its run from Oklahoma City to Mangum, the first in the state. The 36-passenger size bus had been equipped as a railroad mail car. A new traffic law required all automobile drivers to signal their intentions when they were about to turn, slow down or stop. Mr. Ray Hogan came to Mangum from Friendship in 1949 to pilot the seniors of 1950 through their final days at MHS.

Class officers for this class were: Paul Goode, President; H. C. Anglin, V-President; Secretary was Linda Lanford; June McArthur was Valedictorian and Gwen Hannah, was Salutatorian; Evelyn Barrett was the Football Queen; Severlan Vaughn was named All-State Catcher at the close of the baseball season; Class Sponsors were: Mrs. J. L. Smalling and Mr. Kenneth Smith. Class Parents were Mr. and Mrs. Ed J. Grigsby.

Officers for the MHS Alumni Association were: President: Alzie Worthen, Class of 1935; V –President was ‘Bob’ Overton, Class of 1943; Margaret Gray-Carder, Class of 1939, served as Secretary and Lacy S. Noble Jr., Class of 1929, held the Treasurer position.

LOVE IS ETERNAL
BY PAT WINN, SENIOR 1955
Mangum Star, May 19, 2005

Love is eternal, it is a sacred thing;
Tis something to honor and something to cherish;
It has that quality which makes the world sing,

And its undying Faith shall never perish.

Love is like a pure, clear, tinkling bell
Which resounds with a rich, vibrant note;
It ascends through the ages and continues to swell,
Like a song, melodious and full in a bird’s throat.

A love that grows as years mellow the age
Will be marked with a patience strong and fine;
And life will cease to be one long endless maze,
But will reflect a light filled with radiance sublime.

Tis love, eternal, will prove a rock of strength
Upon which dreams can be built and fulfilled, at length.
